Be Still My Soul
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.
Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.
Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.
Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise
On earth, believing, to Thy Lord on high;
Acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways,
So shall He view thee with a well pleased eye.
Be still, my soul: the Sun of life divine
Through passing clouds shall but more brightly shine.

Are these your words John? If they are you have exceeded all the expectations I ever had for you. If they are not yours then your choice of material is commendable. No one could have said it better. I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your grandmother. From what I have heard she left many beautiful memories both for her family and the others that she met in life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
I'm really sorry to hear, John. And I share as best as I can in your loss. :hugs:
I came to this post late, but you don't know how appropriate the hymn is for me too. I have another friend right now facing the prospect of the same, and a few other situations swirling. Loss surrounds us, and yet--
Loss is not all! The Lord is indeed on your side, and in the face of that truth, what more can we say but Hallelujah? I'm looking forward to the resurrection, John. I really am. & in the meantime, my friend, I'm praying with you.
When you are ready, be comforted.
Thank you both.
This is actually an old hymn by Katharina von Schlegel with an English translation by Jane Borthwick. They've started singing the song a lot recently where I go to church, so it's become a recent favorite.
Yeah... they sang this one back in both London and Jamaica. My grandparents like to sing it at family worship too: #461 in our hymnal. [more useless information for a busy grad! :-)]
