PRAYER

At some point you pray
not because you’ve made it
not because you see the stony hand

opening before you
but somewhere the sky leans a familiar gray
into the trees and they acknowledge it
reweaving the shroud of their deep roots

nothing in particular happens to you
the sky becomes a still white mound
and suddenly your knee goes down.
